Universal Health Services (UHS) has begun deploying a generative AI agent to follow up with patients after hospital discharge, aiming to improve post-care engagement and recovery outcomes. Initially launched at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in Nevada and Texoma Medical Center in Texas, the AI system is now being expanded across the 29-hospital network. The AI agent contacts patients to review medication instructions, check for complications, and escalate care to a live nurse if necessary. According to UHS, patient engagement with the AI has been strong, receiving an average satisfaction score of 9 out of 10.
The technology behind the agent was developed by Hippocratic AI, a healthcare-focused generative AI startup co-founded with support from UHS. UHS President and CEO Marc Miller highlighted the collaborative and safety-focused approach taken with Hippocratic AI to ensure realistic and meaningful patient interactions. The partnership underscores Hippocratic AI’s growing role in real-world clinical applications, as its agents are designed specifically for non-diagnostic tasks like post-discharge communication. With promising initial results, both UHS and Hippocratic AI plan to scale the program further, aiming to enhance continuity of care and reduce hospital readmissions.
