We don’t have enough healthcare workers. Here’s how AI can help

Global healthcare systems are facing a critical shortage of workers, exacerbated by aging populations, long-standing staffing gaps, and post-pandemic burnout. Munjal Shah, CEO of Hippocratic AI, emphasizes that without major innovation, the quality of care—especially for older adults—will deteriorate. Artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI agents, is emerging as a potential solution to this crisis by supporting healthcare workers in non-diagnostic, repetitive tasks like follow-up calls, intake coordination, and medication reminders. By automating such functions, AI can reduce readmission rates, improve continuity of care, and even reach underserved populations more effectively by communicating in local languages.

Hippocratic AI, founded by Shah, has taken a safety-first approach to deploying healthcare AI. The company’s agents do not diagnose but instead support administrative and patient engagement tasks, achieving a reported 99.38% accuracy rate—surpassing average human clinician performance. The firm trained its models through over 300,000 test calls involving more than 6,000 licensed medical professionals and has made over 2.49 million patient interactions to date. With recent international partnerships, including one in Japan, Hippocratic AI is expanding its multilingual capabilities and empathetic interface design, aiming to fill crucial care gaps while preserving safety and patient trust.
