WellSpan Health, General Catalyst expand partnership to test out and scale AI technologies

WellSpan Health is expanding its partnership with venture capital firm General Catalyst to co-develop and scale artificial intelligence technologies aimed at transforming healthcare delivery. As the first transformation partner of General Catalyst’s Health Assurance Transformation Corporation (HATCo), WellSpan will serve as a testbed for new AI-driven tools focused on improving care quality, operational efficiency, and workforce capacity. The collaboration builds on WellSpan’s existing work with several General Catalyst portfolio companies, including clinical AI startup Aidoc and Hippocratic AI. Executives from both organizations highlighted goals such as reclaiming over 400,000 clinical hours annually, integrating fragmented healthcare systems, and improving both patient and employee experiences over a five-year strategic roadmap.

A key focus of the partnership is the continued development and deployment of Hippocratic AI’s generative AI healthcare agent, which WellSpan was among the first to adopt. WellSpan has invested in Hippocratic AI and engaged in deep co-creation efforts, leading to tangible improvements in internal processes and patient care delivery. CEO Roxanna Gapstur emphasized the strong results already seen from the collaboration, stating that the success of their work with Hippocratic AI helped justify the expanded partnership. Together, WellSpan and HATCo aim to innovate in areas such as care navigation, personalized medicine, and workforce automation—developing scalable AI solutions that could serve as a model for health systems nationwide.
