WellSpan Health has become the first official “transformation partner” of General Catalyst’s Health Assurance Transformation Company (HATCo), marking a deepened alliance aimed at reimagining healthcare delivery with AI. The initiative will focus on automating administrative tasks to free up staff time, personalizing care through advanced data tools, and creating strategies for financial sustainability. WellSpan projects that these efforts could reclaim over 400,000 clinical hours annually and yield double-digit business improvements within five years. The partnership builds on collaborations that began in 2023, where WellSpan worked with portfolio companies including Aidoc and Hippocratic AI, applying AI solutions to address workforce shortages and improve efficiency.
President and CEO Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., emphasized that WellSpan’s experience with companies like Hippocratic AI has already proven the effectiveness of deploying innovative AI tools at scale across the health system, not just in pilots. Those lessons will guide the broader transformation effort, which will be measured across financial performance, operational outcomes, and patient and provider satisfaction. Gapstur noted the goal is to simplify and personalize care while enabling clinicians to focus on patients rather than bureaucracy. As part of its role, WellSpan will influence the design of new AI tools, build staff capacity to use them safely, and share its learnings with other health systems—potentially creating a model for AI-driven transformation across the industry.
